Steins;Gate – It’s About Time

OR: I Tapped ENTER For 30 Hours and All I Got Was This Lousy Ending

Since I recently time-traveled all the way back to the beginning of visual novels with Portopia, I figured I would check out this more modern title to see how the genre has evolved in all these years. Steins;Gate may be 10 years old already (in effect making it retro-ish), but since it’s about time travel, does it really matter? The game will make you think about things like that; at least, it did for me, as I finally got around to playing this now-legendary title for the first time. Or maybe I’ve been here before in a different reality, and it wasn’t my first time? (Yeah, it was, I’m just messing with you.) (I think.) Continue reading “Steins;Gate – It’s About Time”

Solving The Portopia Serial Murder Case

As a fan of graphic adventure/visual novel type games like Snatcher and Jesus, I’d been meaning to tackle Portopia for the Famicom for many years.

Thanks to our current worldwide situation, I just happened to have plenty of time to do it. And not only did I play it, but I took it apart. Continue reading “Solving The Portopia Serial Murder Case”

Heavy Rain’s Classic Ancestry

I may be late to the party (as usual), but I recently played and finished Heavy Rain for the first time. Being a 2010 release for the PlayStation 3 (although I played it on PS4), I guess it’s technically “retro,” although personally I’m not a big fan of attaching the “retro” or “classic” or “vintage” tags to anything quite that recent. However, during the hours I poured into just one play-through, certain aspects of its design felt very familiar, and I recognized immediately why: Heavy Rain features an interesting combination of game design concepts that hearken back to adventure games of the ’80s and ’90s, but reimagined and presented through a modern filter. Finding Jesus

Jesus - Tale of the Dreadful Bio-monster-16

Jesus: Kyoufu no Bio-Monster is one of those games I’d always heard about in “weird Famicom games from Japan” lists — you know, just mentioned because it was called “Jesus,” and then glossed over to talk about the next game in the list, which was probably that impossible-to-finish Takeshi’s Challenge game or whatever. But I never really looked into what the game actually was, until recently. And when I did, I got pretty excited and dove in headfirst. Continue reading “Finding Jesus”
