The MDb Metroid Marathon 2024 is here!

This year’s Metroid Marathon, the annual month-long livestreaming event, is happening a month early this year! Due to some scheduling issues, the marathon is taking place in September instead of October — meaning it’s already underway!

Also this year, the MDb will be taking donations during the streams, with proceeds going to the National Breast Cancer Coalition.

Once again, I will be participating by playing through the original NES Metroid on Monday, September 16 at 9:00 pm CDT. I hope you can join us!

Games will be simultaneously streaming on 3 different platforms:
Twitch – twitch.tv/metroiddatabase
Youtube – youtube.com/metroiddatabase
Facebook – facebook.com/metroiddatabase

Full schedule below:

MDb’s Annual Metroid Marathon Starts Today!

The Metroid Databasethe website I started in 1996 — is beginning its annual Metroid Marathon today, and for the first time, I am making my return to the MDb to participate!

With this being the anniversary month of the MDb (launched on October 16, 1996), each October they do a marathon in which they livestream every game in the Metroid series. With the franchise now totaling 14 games, and some of them requiring quite a few hours to complete, that provides plenty of daily content to last throughout the month. This year, they have graciously invited me to be a part of it, and I am honored to have been given the prestigious position of playing through the original Metroid on October 16 at 9:30 pm CDT, live on Twitch!

As you may know, October 16 is also significant because it’s the anniversary of the launch of Retro Game SuperHyper (that was intentional), so it’ll be a fun way to celebrate. I hope you all swing by and watch, chat, and join in the fun!

I will be playing the game on original hardware — no emulators — and there may be a surprise or two as well. I’ve been training hard, playing Metroid 1 over and over, so that I can give you a good show!

Find the full schedule HERE at the MDb. Please check out the MDb’s Metroid Marathon daily at the MDb’s Twitch channel, and follow the RGSH Twitch channel too (the MDb’s channel will also be linked through my channel when they’re streaming). Can’t wait to see you there!

Midwest Gaming Classic 2023

Midwest Gaming Classic went down from March 31-April 2, 2023, and I attended on the show’s final day, Sunday the 2nd.

As I’ve mentioned in all of my previous posts about MGC (2022, 2019, 2017), I have attended nearly every year that the show has run since 2005. (There was a blizzard in 2018, 2020 didn’t happen due to Covid, and 2021 didn’t work out for me.) That’s a lotta shows! Some years, I will admit, have been better than others; unfortunately, I felt like I didn’t get much out of it last year, but that was largely due to my own tight schedule, not any fault of the show’s.

However, I am happy to report that this year, I had a great experience and it felt like a true return to form. I saw and played lots of kickass games, picked up some cool stuff, enjoyed some entertaining panels, and met some rad people. Let’s get into it!

Back From the Dread

As a “Metroid guy,” I want so badly to write about Metroid Dread. I have lots of thoughts about the game and what it means for the series as a whole. But how do I tackle it?

Never Say Never

Just the other day, the Nintendo Direct broadcast on the 23rd of September, 2021, my mind was blown clean out of my skull by Square Enix’s surprise announcement of Actraiser Renaissance, a remake of one of my all-time favorite, put-on-a-pedestal games, Actraiser for the Super NES. Making the news that much more nuclear was the uranium cherry on top: the game was available THAT DAY.

Retro at E3 2021 (and some other recent announcements)

This past week was E3! While this year was much different than past events, there’s still lots of news to share, including exciting retro gaming-related surprises. Let’s jump in!

Almost-4.5-year State of the Blog Address

Hey there, guys and gals. Look, we need to talk.

*pulls up chair, turns it around, and sits on it backward like a school guidance counselor or church youth group leader who really wants to “rap” some “real talk” with the kids*

So, you guys still liking Retro Game SuperHyper? Yeah? Good! Yeah, no, that’s great, I’m glad to hear it! So before you go freaking out or anything, don’t worry — Retro Game SuperHyper isn’t going anywhere, it’s not getting shut down, the blog is staying right where it is, the t-shirts are still for sale, and the fanzine is continuing.

The reason I wanna talk is because there’s just gonna be a few…changes around here, that’s all. But don’t sweat it, champ! It’s all gonna be good stuff, I promise!

Seriously though, as I approach the fourth-and-a-half-year mark of the blog, I felt the need to shake things up a bit, so I wanted to do my half-year SOTB address (which is usually posted mid-April) a bit early to share my plans!

Super Metroid Re-Acquaintance (Updated 06.24.20)

(This post is being continually updated.)

It’s rare that there’s an immediate follow-up to a post here on the blog, but in my last post, I wrote about climbing back into the ol’ Chozo armor and trying to GIT GUD at Super Metroid again. While I’m in no way a speedrunner, I used to feel pretty proficient at Metroid 3; sadly, my skills had atrophied over the years, and I really wanted to polish them up again, and use what I’ve learned about the game in the many years since I last beat it to improve my own personal best in-game time of 1:28, which I had set wayyyyy back in the ’90s.

So how’d that go? Let’s find out… Continue reading “Super Metroid Re-Acquaintance (Updated 06.24.20)”

Wait…WHAT Are We Playing?? Super Metroid?!

Usually I post articles called “What Are We Playing?” when I start a game or two that I plan to write about when I’m done. They’re always games that are new to me — even if they’re old, I’m playing them for the first time. So why am I alerting you to the fact that I’ve been playing good ol’ Super Metroid?

True confession time: Even though I’ve plowed through Super Metroid dozens of times since it came out (I lost count somewhere around 38 back in the ’90s, so I’d estimate 60-80), it’s actually been YEARS since I’ve done it. And in the few times I’ve picked it up more recently, a terrifying truth revealed itself to me: I’ve actually forgotten how to do it. Continue reading “Wait…WHAT Are We Playing?? Super Metroid?!”

Lifting Waits

Shenmue III came out today.

Say it again, with me:

Shenmue III CAME OUT. TODAY.

Did you ever think that phrase would actually come out of your piehole?

That Time I Went to E3

With E3 2019 just about here, I thought I’d finally talk about that time some friends and I weaseled our way into the Electronic Entertainment Expo.
