E3 2019 Retro Round-Up

E3 2019 has come and gone, and although the event is supposed to be all about the latest and greatest in video games, damn if there wasn’t a TON of retro gaming represented this year!

While reporting news is not necessarily the point of this blog, I do have a habit of trying to organize and summarize information, if for no other reason than to make sure I’m not missing anything. So in the interest of doing just that, I’m going to try to create a list of all the announcements and reveals coming out of this year’s E3 that is of particular interest to retro gaming enthusiasts.

What’s Left to Mini?

The retro gaming community is currently losing its collective mind over Konami’s E3 announcement of the TurboGrafx/PC Engine Mini console.

As well they should! It’s amazing that it’s coming out, and that the TG16/PCE is getting some official love and recognition in 2019!

Am I gonna buy it, though? I’m actually not so sure.

Godzilla, King of the Kusoge?

Here’s a confession: I have loved Godzilla for even longer than I’ve loved video games. It’s true! I actually cannot recall when I first discovered Godzilla — I literally have no memory of a time when I did not watch and love his movies, and some of my earliest memories of watching any TV at all are of Godzilla. It had to have been pre-Kindergarten that I started watching them — maybe my older sister had watched them because she was into horror movies — but I didn’t discover video games until I was five or six, and I know I was watching Godzilla before then.

Anyway, with Godzilla and video games being two of Japan’s most significant pop culture exports, naturally there have been a bunch of Godzilla video games. Unfortunately, as is the case with many licensed properties, many of them are…not that good. And those that are decent are probably most enjoyable only by hardcore kaiju-eiga no otaku.

The problem with Godzilla games is that he SHOULD translate wonderfully into a video game, but he often just… doesn’t.

Wasn’t that great?

For years, gamers have raved about the work M2 has done in bringing arcade games to home consoles with amazing accuracy and a wealth of added options, customizations, and assorted bells and whistles. And now, thanks to this new documentary, we know a little more about who is behind all that meticulous work: A bunch of crazy hardcore game nerds, that’s who. My kinda people! …and if you’re reading this, probably yours too.

Detective Pikachu: It’s Blade Runner for kids!

As a 44-year-old man, I am not exactly what you would call Pokemon’s target demographic. Then again, the original game did come out when I was a lot younger, 20 years ago, and I enjoyed it very much at the time. So while I’m not really up to date on any and all things Pocket Monster, I can still appreciate its concepts on the level of an old Game Boy RPG.

That said, I was actually looking forward to seeing the Detective Pikachu movie as soon as I saw the trailer. A somewhat more adult take on Pokemon looked like a lot of fun!

Happy 30th Birthday, Game Boy!

As we all well know by now, today, April 21, 2019 is the 30th birthday of the Nintendo Game Boy! …although, at age 30, I would think he’d be a Game Man by now. I mean, he’s been able to vote in America since 2007.
