As a gamer, it can be tough when your favorite game franchise doesn’t really exist anymore, or you’re still in love with a legendary one-off title that came out 30 years ago. You may love those old games, but you’ve played through them a million times; so, of course you still want more, but the companies or developers that made them either don’t care or are long gone. Where can we turn?
Enter the Spiritual Successor.
Super Metroid was released on March 19, 1994 in Japan, making today its 25th anniversary.
Quick reminder here that I founded the Metroid Database website back in 1996 — but only to preface my saying that I literally, probably, cannot write any more about Super Metroid than I have already. I’ve played it, researched it, reviewed it, examined it, praised it, torn it apart, and got an S-logo tattoo. And I’ve watched others do the same, for 25 years now. I have only recently become aware of some of the bad press that Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest has gotten. This came as somewhat of a shock to me, as Castlevania II has always been one of my favorite games on the NES, and I guess I thought most people agreed with that. It’s also a direct influence on the modern style of Castlevania games, having been referenced directly in some of the series’ best entries.
