Ys-y Like Sunday Mornin’

The cooler autumn weather brings a different mood to every aspect of life, and to counteract the oncoming gloom of winter’s shorter days and my disappointment about having to actually put on pants to go outside, there are some good things about it, too. I get to bust out my trusty old leather jacket, myriad delicious Oktoberfest beers appear on store shelves (especially here in Wisconsin), and my dogs love running through the leaves and, eventually, the snow.

Along with all the bundling-up and hunkering-down comes a change in my gaming mood, too. Yes, ’tis the season of RPGs, when a nice, long quest to save some crystals or prevent the destruction of the world or some such nonsense is just what the doctor ordered to get us through the months that end in “-ber” and “-uary.”

Lately, after doing some thinking about it and with no new games catching my interest, I’ve wandered back to the Ys series.

PC Engine Mini: The RGSH Test

Well, two months after it was released, I’m finally getting to write about the PC Engine Mini. How is it?

Worth it. So, SO worth it. Continue reading “PC Engine Mini: The RGSH Test”

I Found A Box Full of Cool Stuff!

I was looking for some of my old Atari catalogs, and I found them in this box that has piles of other stuff in it, so if you have about 45 minutes to hang out, I thought you might like to dig through this box with me.

There’s some cool surprises in here, like original Nintendo Fun Club cards, Midwest Gaming Classic flyers, old console manuals, catalogs showing games that never came out, and some promotional VHS tapes.

Thanks for watching, hope you dig it, and if you do, please do the whole like-and-subscribe thing!

TurboGrafx-180

I can totally admit when I’m wrong.

Not long ago, I wrote a lighthearted post about mini consoles I’d like to see. The impetus of the post was the upcoming TurboGrafx-16 and PC Engine Mini, which I stated, with some measure of certainty, that I probably would not be buying, because I already had most of the dozen or so games announced.

What I did not realize was that Konami had not yet dropped the full list of games to be included on the console. And now that a complete list of 50 games has come out, which will be 98% identical across all three releases of the console (TG16 in the US, PCE in Japan, and Core Grafx in Europe), I fully admit that I have done a 180-degree turnaround and will now totally be buying one. Pre-ordering, even!

Why? Because some extremely desirable titles will be on this machine — desirable enough to me, at least, to make it worth the $100 price tag.

What’s Left to Mini?

The retro gaming community is currently losing its collective mind over Konami’s E3 announcement of the TurboGrafx/PC Engine Mini console.

As well they should! It’s amazing that it’s coming out, and that the TG16/PCE is getting some official love and recognition in 2019!

Am I gonna buy it, though? I’m actually not so sure.

FX Unit Yuki: The Brand-New PCE/TG16 Game!

2018-05-10 12.16.38.jpg

Way back in October 2016, I plunked down a little over 40 bucks to back a Kickstarter project for a newly-developed PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 game titled The Henshin Engine, which at the time was slated for a March, 2017 release. Welp, in April of 2018, the game finally shipped, and with a newly-modified title of FX Unit Yuki: The Henshin Engine. I’ve been playing it since I received my copy, so let’s check it out!
