Really quick update, just a piece of business really — but as we approach the first anniversary of Retro Game SuperHyper, I have a couple things to announce. And the first one is this:

I figured after a year of running a blog and not getting sick of it yet, I’d go ahead and register the domain. So you can drop the “.wordpress” when visiting the blog now, thereby shaving a fraction of a second off your blog-reading speedrun!

The next announcement isn’t ready yet. It’ll be soon though — closer to the blog’s actual first birthday. And it’s super cool. Stay tuned and thanks for your support!

I have this thing: Atari Flashback Portable 2016

Even though they’ve been out for quite a while, the other day I suddenly and inexplicably had the overwhelming urge to acquire an Atari Flashback Portable. Normally retailing for around 50 bucks, I did a little bargain shopping and found one on clearance for only $28. I figured I couldn’t go wrong at that price, so I made it my own.

A tale of two Star Foxes

Sometimes, things get confusing in this hobby. Especially with videogame titles! Occasionally a game’s name or even content has to be changed depending on the region in which it’s being sold. This can be due to copyright issues, cultural standards, or marketing-based decisions by the publisher. Other times, you run into a situation like what I’m talking about today: in which a kickass, revolutionary, and popular game has the unfortunate privilege of sharing its name with a rightfully-forgotten piece of crap that probably actually directly contributed to the infamous 1983 crash of the whole home videogame market.

Me and the Metroid Database

With Nintendo’s announcement of two new Metroid games at this year’s E3 (Metroid Prime 4 for Switch and Metroid: Samus Returns for 3DS, which is out this Friday and also which I will probably be writing about more than once), I thought now would be a good time for me to write a little something about my history of Metroid fandom, and how I brought it to the internet over 20 years ago with the first dedicated Metroid website, the Metroid Database!

Mighty No. 9 Kickstarter rewards

I was a backer for the Mighty No. 9 Kickstarter, however many years ago that was. Well, we all know that once the game finally came out, it wasn’t met with a roar of approval from a lot of gamers. Personally, I don’t hate the game at all, but I don’t necessarily love it to death either. It’s not amazing, it doesn’t suck, it’s…fine. I’m glad it came out and I don’t regret backing it.

Arcade Pilgrimage: Funspot/ACAM, Laconia NH

I’m a happy dude

About a year ago, I was finally able to cross a major location off my list of “must-visit” arcades around the country. Most years, my wife and I take a vacation (often a road trip) in August to celebrate our anniversary. Last year, our trip took us to the northeastern area of the US, from our home in Wisconsin all the way to Buffalo NY for a few days, a night Vermont, and ultimately to Salem, Massachusetts. But in between our stay in Vermont and our destination in Salem was a stop in Laconia, New Hampshire, so that I could visit the famous Funspot, also known as the American Classic Arcade Museum.

Summer OutRunnin’

We’re right smack in the middle of summer and the weather — even here in Wisconsin — is bright and sunny. The hot sun, blue skies, puffy clouds, and sparkling water always remind me of Sega’s road racing classic, OutRun, and its opening level driving along an idyllic summer beach.
