Atari 50: Retro done right, again

Back in 2019, I wrote a post about the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection, and raved about how impressively well-put-together it was. The collection of games was the cake, but the icing was the wealth of historical information. SNK40 was lovingly compiled by Digital Eclipse, and to me, was the epitome of classic game collection titles.

Now, Digital Eclipse may have — no, they definitely have — outdone themselves with what may be one of the most significant anniversary collections in video game history. To put it bluntly, Atari 50 needed to be spectacular. And it is!

Video Vinyl: Shadow of the Colossus and Actraiser

Just when I said I wasn’t going to be making as many regular blog posts, here comes the return of Video Vinyl! Bet you didn’t see that coming!

Okay, so to follow that shocker, here’s a hot take:

There’s too damn much video game vinyl.

Too Much of a Good Thing

Classic cute-’em-up Cotton is getting a reboot! Titled, appropriately enough, Cotton Reboot, and including the original X68000 version (which is pretty identical to the arcade version, from what I can tell) as well as an HD remake, the game is being issued by BEEP for PS4 and Switch in a variety of configurations. I’m excited!

By “a variety of configurations,” I mean a standard game-only edition, a box set including all sorts of bonus items, and a dee-luxe edition with all the box set stuff plus a cool throwback X68000-style case.

The X68000 version is the one I would love to have, but ultimately, I opted to buy just the game by itself. Why tho?

What Are We Playing? 07.03.19

Man, June was a heck of a month for games! Considering I don’t buy a ton of new games these days, any month where at least three new titles are must-haves for me is some sort of record. So what are we playing? Continue reading “What Are We Playing? 07.03.19”

Godzilla, King of the Kusoge?

Here’s a confession: I have loved Godzilla for even longer than I’ve loved video games. It’s true! I actually cannot recall when I first discovered Godzilla — I literally have no memory of a time when I did not watch and love his movies, and some of my earliest memories of watching any TV at all are of Godzilla. It had to have been pre-Kindergarten that I started watching them — maybe my older sister had watched them because she was into horror movies — but I didn’t discover video games until I was five or six, and I know I was watching Godzilla before then.

Anyway, with Godzilla and video games being two of Japan’s most significant pop culture exports, naturally there have been a bunch of Godzilla video games. Unfortunately, as is the case with many licensed properties, many of them are…not that good. And those that are decent are probably most enjoyable only by hardcore kaiju-eiga no otaku.

The problem with Godzilla games is that he SHOULD translate wonderfully into a video game, but he often just… doesn’t.

SNK 40th Anniversary Collection: Retro Done Right

I’ve actually had a bit of trouble starting this article. Which is odd, because I love this piece of software I’m about to rave about, and have plenty to say about it. In fact, that’s probably the reason right there: the wealth of content that the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection offers actually borders on overwhelming. So where to start?

Dragon’s Lair Trilogy Collector’s Edition Unboxing

Here’s a piece that I’ve been really excited about: The Dragon’s Lair Trilogy collector’s edition from Limited Run Games for PS4! You all know I’m a sucker for Dragon’s Lair, so I had to pull the trigger on this release, and it sure hit me right in the laserdisc nostalgias. Check out the video to see what’s inside! Fast Striker PS4 LE Unboxing

Last October, game publisher East Asia Soft held a giveaway on Instagram that involved some liking and reposting and tagging, and the prize was a limited physical edition of Fast Striker by NG Dev Team for PS4. Somehow, I was one of two winners! Continue reading “Fast Striker PS4 LE Unboxing”

You’re Already Having Fun

At the risk of featuring too many PS4 games in recent posts (what can I say, they all have a retro connection or I wouldn’t be talking about them), Sega’s Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise (aka Hokuto no Gotoku) was released in the US this week, to the gleeful delight of combined Fist of the North Star and Yakuza fans everywhere. How wide or slim the overlap of that particular Venn diagram is, I don’t really know. But I’m wedged in there myself, and when this game was first announced, my head almost exploded like one of Kenshiro’s unfortunate opponents.

FotNSLP/HnG (it’s a long title either way, I don’t even know how to abbreviate it for this post) is just the latest in a really long line of video games based on the classic manga/anime property, Hokuto no Ken (lit. “Fist of the North Star”), dating all the way back to the ’80s when the manga was current and the show was actually airing on Japanese TV. Some of the games are good; many are not. And out of the dozens of HnK games released, only a handful were released outside of Japan. Let’s take a look at some of the good ones, shall we? (Perhaps I’ll do another post about all the not-so-good FotNS games someday, and call it “You’re Already Disappointed” or something.) (Don’t steal that, I just came up with it.) A New Dragon Quest Draws Near!

IMG_20180905_093617_486.jpg

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age has finally been released in North America. For many of us, this is the first “proper” new Dragon Quest game we’ve gotten to play since the 2010 release of DQIX on the Nintendo DS, as the online installment, DQX on the Wii, wasn’t released over here. That’s eight years we’ve been waiting!

DQIX was a great game, but I absolutely loved DQVIII on the PS2, having sunk over 100 hours into it, and I’ve been waiting for another experience like that. I haven’t played enough of XI yet to determine if it lives up to my memories of VIII, but so far it’s headed that way.

The thing I really love about Dragon Quest, and the reason I’m writing about it here, is its solid connections to the past.

I’m in the Shen-mood

IMG_20180821_233759_825.jpg

On August 21, 2018, something that nobody thought would ever happen did, in fact, happen: Shenmue I & II were re-released in HD for current consoles and PC. Continue reading “I’m in the Shen-mood”

Joystickery, Part II

IMG_20180728_104007_184.jpg

I did a whole blog post a while back about how much I love joysticks/arcade sticks/fightsticks. (Actually, I don’t play a ton of fighters these days, so I guess for me they’re more “shmupsticks.”) Whatever you want to call that slab of arcade-perfect precision control, I have added them to most of my game consoles, and they’ve enhanced my enjoyment of shmups, fighters, and arcade classics immensely.

So when I realized that I had a handful of shmups on the PlayStation 4, I started to want to add an arcade stick to that platform as well. Then I picked up the Street Fighter II 30th Anniversary Collection, and remembered how much I HATE playing Street Fighter games with a pad, so that made up my mind in a hurry: time to shop for a PS4 stick.

But in this day and age of cool custom arcade sticks, I knew one thing: it couldn’t be just ANY arcade stick.
